San Diego County Midwives Breastfeeding (Babyfeeding) Support Group is held in-person every Thursday from 10am to 11am at our office in Poway.

Our lactation consultants and educators assist those attending the group free of charge during this time.

We welcome all who need help in breastfeeding or want to join our babyfeeding support group.

Our group is for all mothers and partners to discuss the joys and challenges of feeding their baby.

“Our mission is to provide San Diego families with loving, helpful, family-centered breastfeeding support while they transition into their new normal. My passion is to help you meet your initial long-term breastfeeding goals before common challenges make it too overwhelming.”
– Lisa Simpkins

SDCM Breastfeeding (Babyfeeding) Support Team

Lisa Simpkins, IBCLC

My name is Lisa Simpkins and am an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). I have had the pleasure of working with families during all times in their pregnancy and postpartum for the last 25 years.  I have been privileged to work with SDCM for almost 20 years, helping families prepare for breastfeeding and develop supportive strategies to support their goals as they feed their babies.  We offer free weekly in-person support in addition to phone support when an in-person visit is not possible.

This journey has included educating families and healthcare providers in hospital, birth center and home birth settings at all times in their parenting transformation.

My personal life includes a close relationship with my adult children and my best friend and husband of more than 30 years. I am a survivor of breast cancer and believe a healthy lifestyle and well-health visits are the best way to live a fulfilling life.

Can’t wait to meet you!

Lisa provides addition information on breastfeeding and lactation on our Guidelines for Breastfeeding page.

Hiromi H., RN, LEC

My name is Hiromi.  I’m an RN and Lactation Education Counselor (LEC).  I have a background as a Labor & Delivery and Postpartum RN in Japan.  I love to support Mothers and Babies. I also love to support Fathers and other family members as well.  Please join us!  My passion and goal in the group are that Mothers are able to feel comfortable, joy, and confidence while breastfeeding.  I’m deeply grateful that I’m able to be a part of your journey.

Takayo Wakayma, LEC

I am Takayo Wakayama, Japanese English bilingual Birth Doula, Lactation Education Counselor. I support families here at this San Diego County birth center.

I was born in Japan. I always appreciate sharing our culture of ancient wisdom.

Since I became a birth doula here in San Diego, I have a deep connection with the Japanese community. For many years I have worked tirelessly to ensure safe, well-informed, and joy-filled births and postpartum experiences. I believe providing lactation support is equally important. So I have a big passion for lactation support too.

Love is medicine to heal everything and anything.

“I started my breastfeeding journey in 2014 with my first baby after having trouble nursing in the hospital following a c-section. I was reluctant to nurse and was convinced I had no milk, but thanks to Lisa and the breastfeeding group which I attended weekly, I was able to actually see the progress and learned how to breastfeed my little one and enjoy it as well. The group provided me with the breastfeeding support that I didn’t know I needed, new mom friends who I am still close to, and I continue to breastfeed to this day with my third daughter. It is a bonding experience with my baby that I feel so fortunate to have, even for this short time. Thank you Lisa!” – Laurie (July 2021)
