What happens during the postpartum home visit?

These are both Well Mother and Well Baby visits. We check on the over all health and well being of both mother and baby in the postpartum period.  Checking vitals, breastfeeding. How are both mom and dad adjusting to this little one? How are the older siblings adjusting to their new little brother or sister?

OB’s generally have one six week postpartum appointment? Why do you have so many more?

This is true! The first 6-8wks postpartum are crucial for a new families success.  Having a baby is life changing for the whole family, no matter if this is your first or fifth baby.  There are many adjustments that happen in this time period. Mom and dad are learning about their new little one. They are adjusting to a lack of sleep, change of their daily routine.

Do you screen for Postpartum Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMAD)?

Yes. In our midwifery practice, we screen all women throughout the prenatal period.

Our midwives follow up in the postpartum period using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS).

If the mother is higher on the scale, we get her referrals to local community groups, UCSD clinic, and counselors specializing in PMAD. We continue to follow up using the Perinatal Anxiety Screening Scale (PASS) as it is much more in-depth and helps us to better assess her needs.

We see our clients at day 1, 3, and 7 or 14. Their care continues with 4-, 6- and 8-week visits.

How will I get a birth certificate for my baby?

After your baby is born, Heather will provide the paperwork for the birth certificate.  Parents call Office of Vital Records and Statistic to make their own appointment at their convenience.
