Nutritional Counseling
Nutritional counseling begins with assessing where you get your basic nutrition. We assess the dietary requirements necessary for the changes in pregnancy.
You will complete a two-week diet diary, supplements and exercise history. We will also discuss any physical signs and symptoms you might be experiencing that indicate nutritional deficiencies.
We evaluate your sources of protein, minerals, and fiber. We work with you to adjust your intake based on your dietary preferences to compensate for the changing requirements of the pregnancy.
Vitamin D
The US currently recommends a minimum of 30 ng/ml in the serum. European recommendations are 50 ng/ml.
For our practice, we do routinely test Vit D levels. What we find is that most women need supplementation during pregnancy and the breastfeeding period.
Recent studies have noted the reduction preterm birth, pregnancy induced hypertension, gestational diabetes, first trimester miscarriage and small for gestational age baby.
There are a number of recent studies that are examining the links between chronic Vitamin D deficiency and increased autoimmune disorders, osteoporosis, alzheimers, and dementia.
Breastfeeding women who supplement with 10,000 IU Vitamin D daily will pass it through the breastmilk to their baby.
Should I take prenatal vitamins?
Most of us do not eat a varied diet that allows them to take in adequate nutrition on a daily basis.
Supplementation only provides a minimal daily amount. We prefer that most nutrition comes from food.
A varied diet of many colors facilitates the intake of a multiple of vitamins, minerals and micro-nutrients.
Do you recommend daily probiotic supplement?
We find that women who are routinely on probiotics tend to have better digestion and a reduction in Group B Strep status at 37 weeks.
